25th Arab Basketball Championship
Cairo is preparing to host the Arab Basketball Championship this December
In a post on Instagram last week, the Arab Basketball Confederation announced the 25th Men's Arab Basketball Championship is scheduled for the 27th of December 2023 until the 3rd of January 2024.
10 teams from across the arab world are preparing to compete later this year.
The 10 countries that are participating are as follows:
- Egypt (Organizers)
- Lybia
- UAE
- Mauritania
- Morocco
- Algeria
- Tunisia
- Jordan
- Kuwait
- Somalia
There are a few countries that are set to be early favorites. Egypt and Jordan might be the heavy favorites right now as they had good runs in the FIBA World Cup this past summer. Morocco, Tunisia, and Kuwait are some teams that might surprise basketball fans unfamiliar with the region’s basketball. Kuwait is one of the best teams in the Gulf Region. The Kuwait Club won the inaugural season of the FIBA West Asia Gulf Conference the previous year.
Additionally, US Monastir was the BAL’s (Basketball Africa League) champion in the second season of the league. US Monastir has a long history of basketball prowess in the region and in international competitions. Morocco is also known to have one of the best leagues in the MENA region. Their league hosts 12 different teams across the country.
Mauritania, UAE, Lybia, and Somalia are some of the less-known countries from fans outside of their respective countries. That said, each and every team has a good chance at competing for the title. The UAE has a great league with 7 teams across the country, as I have covered extensively on this page. Lybia and Algeria, like their neighbors in North Africa, have long histories of playing high-level basketball on the international stage. Somalia and Mauritania will be interesting for me personally as I have very little previous knowledge of their basketball. That said, there is a lot of upside to what they can show this winter.
